At Tynemouth Surf Co we believe it is very important to get the correct equipment for your usage level and ability. For this reason we will assist you with the process of purchasing the surfing essentials.
Buying a wetsuit can be a daunting process, especially if its your first time stepping into the rubbery world of neoprene.
When submerged in water the body loses heat 20 times faster than in the air so you don’t have to be a serious water sports enthusiast to feel the need to keep warm. Wetsuits reduce heat loss by putting a layer of insulating foam neoprene over your skin. A wetsuit should form a seal all over the body, with particular emphasis on the torso, a snug and comfortable fit. This means it is essential to get a good fitting wetsuit which can rarely be achieved without trying several on. Wetsuit sizes and shapes can vary between manufacturer to manufacturer and style to style.
Our staff take the time to advise you on which suits in our stock are likely to be a good match for you. Good wetsuits are not particularly cheap so it is worth taking the time to find a match. Just because you are a medium t-shirt or size 10 dress does not mean you will be the same in a wetsuit. We can advise whether a wetsuit is a good fit or whether another is likely to be more appropriate.
When buying wetsuits for children please note, a wetsuit with two years growing room in it will provide little thermal benefit initially but may help with sun protection.
With such a wide range of shapes sizes and styles, choosing the right surfboard can be tricky. Many factors contribute to buying your first surfboard including budget, body type, and expected frequency of use, but the only thing that matters once you’re in the water is increasing your wave count.
Whilst it might be tempting to buy a foam or semi-soft board when you’re first starting out we would generally advise against it. Most people will want to progress onto more advanced boards within 20 sessions so it becomes false economy.
When you visit us we can discuss your experience and assist with what board we believe would be most suitable for you to start with / progress to. There are a wide range of boards in the hire centre so you can often hire a similar one to see if it is suitable.
