Patagonia Surfing

This week’s blog features two Patagonia films, TheFisherman’s Son and Fish People. The Fisherman’s son features Ramon Navarro, famous big wave surfer from Chile. One of our Surf Co team, Mel, still tells a good story about how she met Ramon at the Surf House in Arica, Chile…

‘I was staying in the Surf House in Arica with my friend Julia. We were hanging out in the communal kitchen area when Ramon Navarro, Gabriel Villaran and some of the best surfers from Chile and Peru rocked up with their photographers.  They all came into the communal area so I thought I would practise my Spanish and start talking to them. I happened to be sitting next to Ramon so we started chatting. I asked him why he was here and he said that a few of them had got together and come from various parts of Chile and Peru to surf El Gringo which is one of the most narly and well known waves in Chile.  It is Chile’s version of Pipe, a tubular A-frame which crashes onto the sharp reef with serious power. The area is occasionally patrolled by agressive sea lions.

When Ramon asked me what I did, I told him that I was here doing some research for my masters degree but that I loved surfing so was catching a few waves here.  He asked if I had surfed El Gringo.  I had a little smile to myself and said ”Ermm no, I have just surfed the small longboard wave around the corner”. I told him that I loved watching big wave surfing though and he asked me if I wanted to watch them surfing El Gringo in the morning. I jumped at the chance and went along as part of the crew, together with the photographers. It was fantastic to watch him surfing and it made my trip!’

The Fisherman’s Son

‘Born and raised at Punta de Lobos, Ramón Navarro found his passion riding the biggest waves on the planet. But his accomplishments in giant surf are just one part of a bigger vision to protect the culture and environment of the Chilean coast.’

Fishpeople

‘Fishpeople tells the stories of a unique cast of characters who have dedicated their lives to the sea. Featuring Dave Rastovich, Kimi Werner, Matahi Drollet and more. Directed by Keith Malloy.’

We, at Tynemouth Surf Co are stoked to announce that we will be stocking Patagonia products in our surf shop in the Autumn.  Patagonia are committed to using business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.

Stay tuned for next week’s blog written by Lauren Davies, talented local writer and surfer.
